I was expecting that the code e.g. messagebox("assign fired") in the assign method would fire if i assign a value to the value property of the editbox.

Regardless, I followed Sergey's advise as he pointed out correctly that VFP help also states that

"The Assign method is not supported for the Value property of a control."
