I know this is probably not the best place for this, but does anyone have any thoughts or idea's on how to go about submitting a web site to most of the major search engines (google, yahoo!, etc) and get a better ranking? I know there are companies that offer this, but their prices are all over the spectrum from a few dollars to hundreds per month.

I realize that most of the search engines eventually find a web site, but I am interested in helping a client get better exposure (without paying for click's) so that his listing would appear higher up in searches. He would be willing to pay a reasonable monthly/yearly fee if needed.

Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.
