A .WAV file is uncompressed - a full CD will cost you 650 MB.

An MP3 file typically compresses in a ratio of 1:12. That is, the same CD will cost you about 50 MB.

Ogg Vorbis is another compression option; it is supposed to compress even better, but I haven't tested it yet. (The other big advantage of Ogg Vorbis is that, unlike MP3, it is royalty-free.)

There are several programs, which you might search on www.download.com or on www.tucows.com, which can create any of those three options, and probably several more, too. I don't know if any of those can be automated from VFP.
