All printers (I think) can be controlled by sending a string of characters as the first line of the print job...

for example...

E&l1O&l6C&a4L&l1E(10U(s0P(s16H(s4102T

sets an HP4 to landscape mode (actually... the little square boxes are supposed to be chr(27))

these are typically referred to as ESCAPE SEQUENCES and should be listed in the printer documentation...
