While this is going on, fox is unresponsive, which is expected and allowable. However, it will not consistantly bring up the hourglass....and to make things worse, it puts (not responding) in the caption of the window, which makes the user go "Aw hell...it's busted" and end the task.

Why not show a message before the query to inform your users that it could take some time to complete the operation ? Tell them that the application will become unresponsive for x minutes.
