You can still use a database. If you add all of your tables to a database, it should work the same as before. I don't think you should have compatibility problems (however, you should test carefully, before committing yourself).
(Actually, you will have compatibility problems, if you need to access the same tables from a FoxPro (not VFP) application, which will not support the new format.)
Then, you can gradually start using features provided by the database - for example, in this case, stored procedures (which will be found by code in any table, for example, in an index expression).
