Well, I found *part* of an answer, on syncfusion's winform faq site...

I can create a usercontrol class with a textbox inside something drawn with the penclass, and use the linecap property to come up with something rounded.

(And there may even be a simpler way than that, but unless there's some capability I'm not seeing, it seems this can only be done with a container control).
