This is a W2K and XP situation only. You need to (for XP) right click your windows desktop, and choose properties. Then choose the Appearance tab and press the Effects... button. The last check box controls if you see the underline or not without pressing Alt. "Hide underline letters for keyboard navigation until I press the Alt key".
