I have read a few threads where some people talk about Mabry tools, but I have not used it.

The one that I use, COMMTOOLS, is pretty simple.
I just SET LIBRARY TO ...
Then I have a timer that looks for data from the specified ports (Direct connect or Modem), when it gets data from either one, it starts communicating (custom method).
It emulates PROCOMM host mode, so if you need a more robust comm host, you could use PROCOMM.
Once online, Upload and Download can be done using several different protocols: XMODEM, XMODEM 1K, YMODEM, etc...
