That normally means amount of transfer/month. My account has a 2.5gb limit. And I can go to a control panel interface to see how much has been transferred.

1gb is a lot, but not for a production application with a lot of users. Also, if you have any large graphics, etc you will eat it up quick. My web host will not allow more than 10-15% of the files on my site to be anything other than web (htm) files.
