You're not using a Novell fileserver are you? When running the client software that ships with Netware, stuff like short filenames works correctly, and DOS-level stuff works as expected -- however things like VFP 6.0's setup wizard chokes badly. Using the client that ships with Windows will solve the VFP problem, but DOS-level stuff doesn't work if you've got the long filename namespace installed (short filenames are not available). Only started seeing this behavior after switching to 2K and XP (used to work fine in Win98).
