As I understand it, it started during the war (WWII, I think) because it afforded an extra hour of daylight by which workers could work. I guess it was continued because it is hard to stop something, once started.

I never understood the use of it, except the fact that everybody's tired at work for at least one month after the change in the Spring. :( Maybe somebody can give me a more reasonable explanation... ?
