I've done something like this for our branches, using Firebird server
Some details:
-connections are through a secure/compressed tunnel, the default server port is blocked by firewall
-lookup/static tables (some of them having 50000 rows) are all saved locally.
-audit log tables from server are used to update static tables when changed

The performance over DSL is very good (few seconds for thousands rows on tests), because the amount of data transferred is small (no lookup data, only transactional data).
