Can anybody help me please.

I am trying to ping a server from my client machine. When I ping the IP address I get a response but when I ping the hostname I get an unknown host error. Having checked the host and lmhosts file I have inserted the correct syntax. It still does not work. Does anybody have any ideas? Could it be possible that these 2 files are not being read correctly.
