I found manipulating a menu - and especially taking items away - quite complicated. Let me point out an alternative, which may, or may not, be appropriate for you: use PUSH MENU, add an item or several, and then use POP MENU to get the menu back to its previous state.

Also, it helps to keep some things out of the menu. For instance, I seldom place commands used to open forms, into the menu. Instead, I use an "open" form (provided by the framework I use) that lists the forms available, depending on user rights.
