I've had this problem before and I concluded this problem has to do with the way Windows renders fonts at different screen resolutions on different monitor.
The easiest way to solve this would be to make the column width bigger in the original template / files.
Another way to solve it would be to use conditional formatting. Though I can't remember if Excel 97 has it. You could set it so that when the value of the cell is greater than 10% it switches to a smaller font.
