Thanks to those who sent suggestions, but I've solved this now. Here's the thing:
As I was appending lots of records to this table, I decided to do the Tableupdate() less frequently, and stopped doing it every time through the loop, i.e. not after every record added. Consequently I made the table buffering 5 - optimistic table. Having encountered the outlined problem, I then put the Tableupdate() back where it was (as in the code example), but still got the problem. Then I wrote to the UT.
Since then I put buffering back to 3, optimistic record - and it all works fine now.
As for the field captions problem - it turned out I was using the wrong i/p s/s, which didn't HAVE meaningful names as column headings - DOH!!
