I know you can send it as an attachment. If you want to send the vcard directly (and I don't know how non-Outlook mail clients handle this) I don't know. I would simply send an invitation to yourself, save the incoming message to disk, and open it in notepad to see what's going on.
I just did that and it hurts my brain... can't tell what's going on there.
