I had been using the block comment feature, and I wrote a chunk of code in my SQL passthrough handler that pulls out commented lines before sending the query string on to the server...but I ran into a problem with the insertion of expressions. The textmerge block ignores comments, which in itself isnt a problem, but when I insert an expression using <<>>, and that expression contains a carriage return, I end up with all but the first lines uncommented in the result string.

I suppose I could use concatenation to build up my query strings, but textmerge works SO nicely for this.
