I am thinking of using WINZIP Self Extractor 2.2, which is a utility separate from WINZIP. I just downloaded an evaluation copy to see if this works for me.

It doesn't always have to be ZIP; there are formats, like RAR or CAB, which typically use around 30% less space for the same files. RAR is a proprietary format, and a commercial program (
www.rarsoft.com); CAB seems to be a free format, and I think you should be able to find compression programs that support it, on
www.download.com,
www.tucows.com, or similar sites, for free.
(I used PowerArchiver a while ago, but the latest version is no longer free.)
