You could use AM, PM portion with almost any of the approaches. ie: To make it simple keep AM/PM part as a label and update it as necessary too.
Also check http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/9834/mainfram.htm for a quicken style datebox (Good techniques to inspire by David Frakenbach).
