It doesn't matter what the station is, although it seems to be the case that the the "record locks per connection" novell setting has to be increased. The same user has troubles from any station, and can close from any station if the data is copied to the local hard drive. I talked to the boss who asked everyone with the problem about their networks. They all have Novell, though most of our users probably do anyway. I got a reply from someone earlier who says this is a normal problem with Novell. Weird, huh?

Thanks for your help - but unless you discover something in coming days or weeks, don't worry about it... I'm changing my locking strategy and getting rid of buffering on these large transactions. But it bothers me that I have to, since if the system crashes during the long procedure they will have to load a backup. If they bothered making one like we tell them to... (What are the odds?)
