Heya Robin -
this is probably too late for your meeting , but - here goes:

1. Connectivity issues back to 'terminals'
2. LOC needed to perform a 'thing', translated into function points.
3. Data Schema obfuscated on most db/2 systems.

For me? those three things are the things that are comparable between the two systems.

There are lots of other things that are really NOT comparable, such as :
1. GUI ? What GUI ? if there's any menu, its gonna be CUA back on the IBM side.
2. RPG is optimized for speed , especially on the AS/400 platfom. You can look at metrics for # of records per second processed, size of bytestream for printer output, etc etc.
3. There are Windows Versions of RPG-work-alike that work quite well on a wintel box going back to any AS/400 - but the speed advantage is lost cause its not native-ly run on the IBM boxen.

There's a lot more, but I'll leave it at that for the moment,
and wish you good luck .

If you're being brought in for a consult, perhaps management has finally decided to 'do some thing else' and get rid of the AS/400 over the next few quarters. IBM maintenance contracts can eat your lunch, if you want to pay them, but at the same time, IBM is wonderful on service level committments [if you pay for those].

If you're gonna completely replace their 'operation' with a Pegasus install or Pegasus-like system - don't forget to 'allow for conversion time' in your quote.

mondo regards [Bill]
