Well I'd say there was an ulterior motive...

Full world support was there because the Afghan government of the time was given ample opportunity to turn the Al-Qaida leaders over to the U.S. (or possibly the U.N.?) and failed to do so.
So the objective of the war there was to get the Taliban out of power AND to capture the Al-Qaida leaders.
It now turns out that the troops allocated to that effort were deliberately held to very low numbers because planning for a war with Iraq was well underway.
The result... Bin Laden and buddies remain at large AND Afghanistan is teetering between democratic rule and fiefdoms run by war lords.

There weren't "lies" but there certainly were unstated facts that might have influenced world opinion had they been known at the time.
