I believe there was downtime. The machine couldn't be accessed.

But that was really irrelevant as the sole contents of this as400 server was a failed rpg application that never made it beyond a few trivial (and not too useful) screens.

I can understand the use of rpg for maintaining old apps, but to develop an entire brand new system from the ground up in this century, using rpg is beyond me (and that's just an euphemism of what I really think).

>I bet there was zero downtime despite that drive crash, and that IBM fixed it onsite under warranty, within 24 hours. We've had 2 drive failures over the years, and in both cases all it involved was a quick hotswap with a new drive. If the users noticed anything at all it was a bit of a slowdown as the raid array rebuilt.

>By solid, I refer to the user experience and data integrity. Parts do fail at about the same rate as good PC parts, and they are ridiculously expensive if you don't have an expensive service contract. I guess that is what appeals to the businessfolk...we pay THIS much each month and the machine does what it's supposed to, period.

>>>...The ONLY thing that this machine has going for it is stability. It is rock solid...moreso than any platform i've had experience with.
