I used RSS 2.0 specs from http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss. RSS feed from my web site based on it is readable in FreeDemon and validated Ok by http://feedvalidator.org/

Two dates are described as optional channel elements:

lastBuildDate
The last time the content of the channel changed.

pubDate
The publication date for the content in the channel.
