That's way I used so many functions to define c3:
c3 = LEFT(ALLTRIM(CHRTRAN(examcode,"0123456789","")),3)
here I remove all digits from examcode, & get first 3 letters of month
1 april 2003 -> apr
23 october04 -> oct and so on..
you must put a CASE for "ANN" -> anual
