I'm with you 100% on this. If you own your own shop and deal mostly with small - often technologically uninformed - clients, then you can use pretty much whatever toolset you want. Unfortunately I'm in the position where I seem to have to chase down employment with existing development shops every couple years and am at the mercy of the tools they use. I've been lucky recently - other than 1 year of unemployment - that those shops used Fox.

>I've made this argument before. History is fraught with examples of products that caught on, even though their competitors were proven technically superior.

>About 10 years ago, even though the VHS/Beta tape wars were long won by VHS, a friend of mine told me that the National Football League was the world's largest user of Betamax equipment due to its technological superiority. With computers, there are numerous examples of software becoming standards for reasons other then technological superiority.

>As computer professionals, we have to have business / marketing savvy also. The writing was on the wall for us as soon as we started to see Foxpro showing up on the "Do not use" list in many corporations.

>>>The real answer should always be that the tool used should fit the job to be done.

>>I agree with this, but I think he might be asking more of what it the best career move. The right tool for the job is correct for that particular job, but when looking at longevity and job security I wonder if using the almost-right tool for the job is ok too.
