The Universal Thread doesn't populate information on read messages per user. So, only back in time messages retrieval mechanisms can be used to get them. There is no direct way of knowing what you have read or not. I personally use Time Warp as I can see that if I logged in for the first time since six hours, then, I would go back in time for about six hours.
