How about if using the PRE tags didn't automatically create a new paragraph? I've had situaltions like Hilmar's and tried to turn PRE off to add bold then turn back on to continue the text, but it drops the bolded text down to a new line.

Something like:

< PRE > Type some text here where < /PRE > < B >this< /B > < PRE > is bold? < /PRE >

Without it dropping the word "this" on a line by itself? Is that under your control?
