Question is, how do I "deactivate" the activation for the computer XP Home was on so I can apply the activcation to the second machine since MS will reject the attempt to activate XP on the second machine due to different hardware, etc. Is there a procedure for this? Does MS have to be contacted, etc.?

Bill,

I bought a new machine to replace one that had XP Pro on it and just installed XP Pro on the new machine with no problem. The new one definately had different hardware. I thought the deal was that you got like 10 activations and that was it, but maybe I just got lucky?
