What is (are) the index expression(s)? It is a circular table (a table where you re-use some records)? We have problems with circular tables where the index file (CDX) grows continuosly, to the point we need re create all the indexes for it, and it is easily to see it for the CDX file is larger than the DBF file (like in your case) when the size of the CDX is normally 1/10th of size of the DBF (just after re-indexing, for example). I can't remember what happens with the record count when this happens, or if it is affected, but it seems to me that your CDX is overgrown, so I would try to recreate it.
