Our experience is that we do not lose any records because of the re-indexing process to fix this problem. We lost records prior to this proccess, for when the index is corrupted in this way, it always appends the record in the same place, that is, it always overwrites in the same position over and over again.

I would make a copy of all the files, just in case, and then recreate the indexes, you can do it manually with INDEX ON.
