Thanks for your help, I found out what the problem was. After stepping through the MM classes I discovered that the child biz rules where never being called because the dataset was empty. I was trying to create business rules to ensure the user had enter at lease one item in the dataset. I probably should be using the CheckRequiredFields for that.

When there is some data in the dataset to save, the biz rules get called.
