Please don't get me wrong. I guess I should have put "can lead" in my sentence. I'm not saying "invariably". What I mean by slovenliness is that such liberal use of these commands, in order to get round bugs, punching exit doors out of the code, installing escalators and elevators, and garbage chutes, to continue the analogy, you end up with an Ikea store, with all those little side doors by which you can slip into another department, and miss all the goodies on your predefined loop. Another analogy is you end up with a game of snakes and ladders.
Proper use of structure, and timely adjustments to it (from the start, as each wee bug, or exception, arises), leaves code that's a lot more readable and maintainable.
