Word appearing behind other apps seems to be "by design". Several MVPs are reporting this happening when Word is set as the default mail editor in Outlook. You could change this setting (in Outlook, go to Tools | Options | Mail Format). The reason is that Word is already running in the background. This would explain why I'm not seeing the behavior as I don't have Word set as my email editor.
