I don't think we get dumber...software tries to outsmart us. I've made it standard practice to go into Options whenever I install new software to see what I can customize to make it work the way I want.

My conclusion was that if Word was installed it used Word, else it used some internal thing. Even the dialog where I just changed it makes no mention of some other editor, only to use Word or not. Sure, it might follow to most that not using Word required using something else but my assumption on that was a basic Notepad-like option.
