After Mike's message, I did run a couple of tests on some of my real data, and sure enough, it works exactly in the reverse to what I had thought. The difference isn't much, but it's there. As I update my apps in the regular course of maintenance and improvement, I'll be changing the way I've been handling it. The coding changes aren't significant thank goodness.
