Actually, I found last night after implementing the datagrid that the 31 days don't really take up as much room as I was afraid since the columns will be most likely 1 digit only.

However, your idea is definitely one possibility. Or I could even have 5 datagrids on the page, one for each week. However, they do want to see the total for the task item for the month. Possible, I know, but it's a complexity and a consideration.

The presentation goo I'm not liking right now is having to click on a button or hyperlink to put a row in edit mode.

My other idea is probably horrible, but it's to just use an html table.
