Firstly, they are not relative if you run executable locally and data is on server. Regardless to this, the difference is that setting Database property you have 100% guarantee that you use exactly the data you want, setting paths (usually not one) you take chances (very small i admit this, but as you see from initial post possible) that you will meet some unused data copies in some place and your app will grab it readily.
