The VD (not what you may think - I mean the View Designer) is surely improved in 8; haven't played with it too much so I can't tell you how exactly.
I think he meant you may not have this problem if you create your views programmatically, using one of the independent view editors. That's the major reason why I can't tell you much about VD, because I had maintained my views that way for a number of years. I use VD only to create a new simple view - but don't edit it there afterwards.
