My dev machine is XP SP1 with Adobe Reader 6.0.0 (I have the full version of acrobat installed on this computer so the reader is named differently). The reader launches minimized and sits on the Taskbar as the active application. Once I click back on VFP, subsequence prints will use the same reader instance and VFP will remain the active application.

I began testing on another machine. First with XP, then with XP SP1. Acrobat Reader Versions 5.0.0, 6.0.0, 6.0.1, and 6.0.2 gave the same results with both O/S.
