I've been using VistaDb side by side with SQL Server and it's more compatible in terms of functionality and syntax than anything Microsoft makes so it makes a good match for applications that might need to ship local file support in addition to SQL Server.

I haven't done performance tests but from what the guys at VDB say it should also perform very well in moderate multi-user scenarios.
