You're right. Before VFP8, the View/Query Designer was pretty much useless IMO. Dan already recommended View Editor and I'll do the same. We use it for all of our view work.

The field swap I had figured out, but in the view designer, there's a limit to how complicated you can make the where statement, so I was looking for other options.
