Thanks, but no cigar. I tried the sp_attach_db and sp_attach_single_file_db SPs; neither worked, I believe because the databases were never detached in the first place.
It turns out they had the .MDF data files and .LDF log files on separate drives. Most of the log files on C:. However, I was able to retrieve most of the log files from the old hard drive (hadn't completely failed yet). With those in the expected locations on the new HD most of the DBs are under control now.
