I don't know if you read further down the thread, but I failed to realize (until Nadya and Rod brought it to my attention) that you were clearly working with VFP data, and for that I apologize.

I assumed (bad word!) that you were working with SQL server, which has scope_identity.

VFP doesn't currently have a one-line equivalent for retrieving the auto-inc field (at least that I'm aware of). That question has been posted over on the VFP forum several times, but I'm not aware of any answer. Again, very sorry for the mistake.
