2 small points I forgot to mention:

vfp ONLY gets the the boost through the disk cache on RAM-rich machines if operating under >=W2K (even setting the cache settings under NT4 in the registry didn't help much <g>). Given today's HW, the exclusion of NT4 from the supported OS for vfp8/9 makes [some] sense from a performance point of view.

The first few database benchmarks on 64/32Bit computing under Linux show the 64Bit versions running on the same machine to be 20-25% faster. The mechanisms working there *should* apply to SQL-server as well, when it goes 64Bit. Something to keep in the background of your head - no direct data yet.
