I asked this question a while ago, and Michel told me that interpretation of HTML codes within < PRE > is disabled on purpose. I believe this is because anything you write within < PRE > tags might be part of your program code.
It seems we have to resort to workarounds, for example, turn < PRE > off and then on again.
