Okay, I just pulled my binder from the Advisor conference in Phoenix in '95. (This is the one with two howling dogs.) It was at the Pointed Hilton at Squaw Peak. No sign of a tent at that one. The sessions were in rooms named Kiva, Kachina, Navajo and Hopi, and Rick Strahl wasn't a speaker.

The '96 DevCon was Rick Strahl's debut (and, if memory serves, it took at phone call and some arm-twisting to get him to agree to speak). This one was at the Scottsdale Princess and included sessions in a tent. To my knowledge, that's the only time DevCon has used a tent for sessions, though there have been meals in tents a few times.
