Don't forget also that a temporary job out of the IT world really needs to be temporary. You can't stay too long out of it. Another competition you did'nt mentioned is students getting freshly out of universities. They probably learned all these cool things you did'nt have the time to learn because you're working.

>Probably all of the below depending on the individual. :o) Honestly, most developers in all countries IMHO are driven enough to find another solution (even if only a temporary one) when economic woes befall them. Especially when they have children. You are forced to. If I lost my job and could not secure another in this field I would have no problem bartending or doing whatever I had to in order to feed my child. The problem is that the longer you stay away from it the more difficult it is to return to it. Especially when your time is taken up working more hours for less money to stay afloat. Few would last for long in this field if they didn't have initiative. :o) Others, well they may not be on the forum because they are now working at Taco Bell...

>>Tired or hearing you complaining! No way. In fact I'm surprised to not hearing you americans (at least those on the UT) complain more about it.
>>
>>I'm wondering about something. Is it because here on the UT only top-notch developers hang out (I'll exclude myself for the top notch group <g>). And as for all domains in life those belonging to the best of the class don't have problems to find well paid jobs. Why be critical of bad situations when you're on top of it all.
>>
>>Is it because many here prefer to always stay politically correct. If you create too many waves then others could interpret this in a negative way. That could be the bad side of having too many influential friends. Touchy situation to critic a big corporation (MS for example) when you've got close friends in the place.
>>
>>Or could it be that the majority thinks that it would'nt change a thing to discuss these things here.

>>>You are probably tired of hearing us Americans complain about outsourcing, etc and the economic impact on an area when it happens but I wanted to tell you how much the U.S. strives to retrain its citizens. Over the past few years North Carolina has lost a large number of furniture manufacturers and cotton and fabric industries. Thousands of North Carolinians were suddenly without work, without training (other than line work), and on welfare. Well, most of those that found a job on their own are still employed by whatever low-income temporary replacement they secured to keep feeding their families. However, some of those that remained on unemployment income and then switched to welfare were able to take advantage of the new job retraining program here. There are actually technical schools that have a number of slots and colleges as well for retraining displaced workers in North Carolina. The moral of this story is that even in the great land of capitalism and take care of
>>yourself
>>> and pick yourself up by your bootstraps and continue on, it pays to sit back and let the system take care of you and wait for the free handout because you might just get it. While I applaud the program, it is simply 'wrong' that it is only available to those still without work after unemployment runs out. Those that accepted whatever employment they could get and continued to be productive tax payers are now stuck in that low-income job. However those that either wouldn't accept a lower paying job or didn't strive to are benefitting from laziness. Very sad...

Iwonder if any other countries (besides ex-British colonies, etc.) have this fitting.
